What is World Children's Day?
World Children’s Day, celebrated on 20th November, marks the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1989. This day aims to raise awareness about the rights of children, promote their welfare, and address issues affecting their well-being worldwide. It highlights the need for children to grow up in a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment.
The UNCRC is an international treaty that outlines the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of children. It was adopted by the United Nations to ensure that every child enjoys the same basic rights, including the right to education, protection from exploitation, and the right to express their views.
The importance of UNCRC rights lies in protecting vulnerable children from discrimination, abuse, and neglect. It emphasises that children have the right to participate in decisions affecting their lives, ensuring their development and well-being are prioritised globally.
