We were delighted to host Coventry’s Poet Laureate, John Bernard, for an incredible poetry workshop with our students! John’s visit brought poetry to life in a way that was both inspiring and deeply meaningful. His personal journey as a poet, alongside his enthusiasm for creative expression, truly captivated the students and staff alike.
During the workshop, John introduced students to various techniques for crafting their own poetry. He encouraged them to explore their feelings, thoughts, and perspectives on the world, emphasising that poetry can be a powerful tool for self-expression and reflection. He created an open, supportive environment where students felt comfortable experimenting with words and sharing their work—a rare opportunity that many found transformative.
Our students particularly enjoyed hearing John read his own poems, many of which they have been studying as part of their curriculum. Hearing his voice and perspective first-hand added a new dimension to the words they’d only seen on paper. This live interaction helped deepen their understanding of the themes and emotions woven into his poetry and allowed them to connect more personally with his work.
By the end of the session, students were buzzing with enthusiasm, eager to continue exploring poetry with fresh insights and a new appreciation for the craft. The workshop not only taught them valuable skills but also ignited a genuine interest in creative writing, with many students expressing how inspired they felt by John’s presence and storytelling.
A huge thank you to John Bernard for sharing his time, passion, and expertise with us. His workshop has left a lasting impact, and we look forward to seeing the creative fruits of this wonderful experience as our students continue to grow and explore as young writers.
