Level 3 Health and Social Care is a varied and interesting course where pupils get to study a variety of topics. This qualification is typically aimed at students who are seeking a career in Health, Social Care or Early years related areas. Students either enter employment at trainee level, e.g. care assistant, playgroup assistant, health care assistant, or undertake higher level qualifications in further or higher education, e.g. HNC, HND, degree.

Course Overview

OCR Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualifications (AAQs), also known as Cambridge Advanced Nationals, are designed for students who are interested in progressing onto higher education. These qualifications complement A Levels, offering a practical and applied approach to learning.

 

Level 3 AAQ in Health and Social Care is a varied and interesting course where pupils get to study a variety of topics. This qualification is typically aimed at students who are seeking a career in Health, Social Care or Early years related areas. Students either enter employment at trainee level, e.g. care assistant, playgroup assistant, healthcare assistant, or undertake higher level qualifications in further or higher education, e.g. HNC, HND, degree.

 

There is a wide variety of related careers such as nursing, midwifery, paramedics, teaching, dietician, nursery nurse, care assistant and social worker, to name but a few. The majority of pupils who study health and social care at level 3 go on to take up places at university studying a variety of courses including nursing, child development, midwifery, primary school teaching and paramedic science.

Entry Requirements

Entry Criteria: 

All students studying  a Vocational Level 3 course should have at least five GCSEs at grade 9 – 4 (A* – C) in academic subjects, including English Language or English Literature at grade 5 and Maths at grade 5.

 
Special Entry Requirements:
  • Level 2 Health & Social Care Merit (if studied)

Students must be prepared to work long hours outside lesson time to regularly review the topics covered.

Assessment Information

Level 3 AAQ Cambridge Advanced National in Health & Social Care. Single (one A level equivalent) 5 hours a week.

 

2 external examined units

  • Principles of health and social care
  • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care

 

2 compulsory NEA units (externally moderated)

  • Person centred approach to care
  • Supporting people with mental health conditions

 

2 optional NEA units (externally moderated)

  • Supporting people with long term physiological conditions
  • Investigating public health strategies
  • Supporting people in relation to sexual health, pregnancy and postnatal health
  • Supporting healthy nutrition and lifestyles

Progression Route

There is a wide variety of related careers such as nursing, midwifery, paramedics, teaching, dietician, nursery nurse, care assistant and social worker, to name but a few. The majority of pupils who have completed this course have gone on to take up places at university studying a variety of courses including nursing, child development, primary school teaching and more recently paramedics.
