Students in Year 9 had the valuable opportunity to welcome Dr Fiona Reynolds from Birmingham Women and Children’s Hospitals, who delivered an engaging and informative talk about her role in the life saving care provided to Malala Yousafzai following the attack in 2012. Dr Reynolds spoke in detail about the medical challenges faced, the collaborative work of her specialist team and the determination required to support Malala’s recovery. Hearing first hand about these events gave students a powerful real world context for their study of the text I Am Malala, deepening their understanding of Malala’s experiences and reinforcing the themes of courage, resilience and the impact of education explored in the book.
