Course Overview

If you are interested in entering the IT industry or wish do an IT degree and prefer a practical approach this is the course for you.

 

Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in IT Single (one A level equivalent) 5 hours a week over two years.

 

Unit 1 Fundamentals of IT 
In this unit you willl earn about the fundamentals of hardware, networks, software, the ethical use of computers and how business uses IT.

 

Unit 2 Global Information

In this unit you will understand the legislation and regulation governing information that flows into and out of an organisation and learn the relationship between data and information.

 

Both Units 1 and 2 are externally assessed examinations.

 

Unit 3 – Cyber Security 
You will learn about the solutions that can be used to prevent or deal with cyber security incidents resulting from challenges faced by individuals and organisations.

 

Unit 8 – Project management 
In this unit you will be able to put into practice what you have learnt by setting up and running a small-scale project and learn project management skills.

 

Unit 9 – Product development 
In this unit you will learn about different product design methodologies and the role of the product development life cycle.

Entry Requirements

Sixth Form Entry Criteria: 

A minimum of 5 9-5 GCSE grades, which must include a grade 5 or above in either English Language or English Literature. 

 
Special Entry Requirements:
  • GCSE Maths 5+

    GCSE ICT 5+ (if studied)

 

Students must be prepared to work long hours outside lesson time to regularly review the topics covered.

Assessment Information

In year 12 there are 2 written exams (Unit 1 and 2) consisting of long and short questions.

In year 13 there is one exam (Unit 3) and 2 units of coursework (Unit 8 and 9).

 

All units are awarded pass, merit or distinction.

Progression Route

This qualification supports progression into further/higher education, training or employment into specialist pathways in IT Infrastructure Technician, Emerging Digital Technology Practitioner, Application Developer, Computer GamesDesigner, Website Designer, Cyber Security, Project Management and Data Analyst.
