Dear Parents and Carers,

Due to the continued high temperatures, which are forecast to be as high as today, and the amber weather warning issued by the Met Office, the school will need to remain closed on Friday.

We were extremely keen to reopen, as we recognise the importance of good attendance and the impact that any lost learning time can have. However, the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff must remain our priority.

Work will be set for students on ClassCharts, and we ask that parents and carers ensure this is completed.

It is vital that all students return to school on Monday. With only three weeks of term remaining, we need every student to make the most of the learning time available and ensure that no further learning is lost.

The Year 9 and Year 12 examination timetables will be updated, and further information will be sent to students and families later.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are writing to inform you that, following the issuing of a Red Weather Warning for extreme heat, the school will be closed to all students on Wednesday 24^th June and Thursday 25^th June.

A Red Weather Warning indicates a high risk to health and safety. Current guidance highlights the potential for significant impacts, including heat-related illness, particularly in environments where temperatures cannot be effectively controlled. While we have a small number of air-conditioned rooms, much of the school comprises south-facing, glass-fronted spaces, which are particularly susceptible to overheating. In addition, we do not have sufficient covered outdoor areas for safe social time during extreme heat.

The Red Weather Warning is due to end at 9:00pm on Thursday 25^th June, and a significant drop in temperature is forecast for Friday 26^th June. Therefore, the school will be open as normal on Friday 26^th June, and we look forward to welcoming students back then. 

We would also like to take this opportunity to emphasise the importance of excellent attendance, as this is key to students’ progress and success. However, this must always be balanced with safety.  We therefore expect all students to return promptly on Friday 26^th June.

Please note:

•  – Internal examinations scheduled during this period will be postponed and will now take place on Wednesday and Thursday of the following week. Further details will follow.

•  

•  – Work will be set via ClassCharts, clearly labelled with the date. We recommend that students complete this work during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning.

•  

•  – Teachers will be available via email during the day should students require support with their work

We strongly encourage all families to follow public health advice during this period of extreme heat:

•  – Stay indoors where possible, particularly during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm)

•  

•  – Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water

•  

•  – Close curtains or blinds in sun-facing rooms

•  

•  – Check on vulnerable family members and neighbours

•  

•  – Avoid strenuous activity in peak heat

We appreciate that this may cause inconvenience, and we thank you for your understanding as we take these steps to ensure everyone’s safety.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates if necessary.

As the weather is predicted to be extremely warm next week, we will be making the following adjustment to the school uniform for next week only (for the following days):

 – Monday 22nd June

 – Tuesday 23rd June

 – Wednesday 24th June

 – Thursday 25th June

 – Friday 26th June

Students will be able to have the option of wearing:

•  – Normal School Uniform

OR

•  – Black, school PE shorts and white school polo shirt, school jumper, trainers suitable for PE.

•  – Religious head wear can be plain white

•  – Students who cannot show their arms for religious reasons may wear a plain, white baselayer under their white t-shirt if they wish.

•  

We will NOT accept shorts that are not PE shorts, or trainers that are not suitable for PE.  Students CANNOT wear a jacket INSTEAD of their jumper.

Students will be allowed to take off their school jumper during the school day if required.

Students will be expected to be back in the full school uniform the following week (w/c: 29.06.26).

Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.  Students may wear a sun hat during break and lunchtime.  As usual full attendance is expected.

After 31 wonderful years at Wood Green Academy, the time has come for me to announce my retirement at the end of this school year. I first arrived here in 1995 as an RE and Sociology teacher, and it has been an absolute privilege to serve this community for over three decades. In that time, I have watched generations grow, and it has been a unique joy to teach not only our current students but also many of their parents over the years! I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the families, past and present, for your incredible warmth, partnership, and support throughout my career. While I am excited for my next chapter, a huge piece of my heart will always remain with the Wood Green family.

Beginners 2 Runners Group

The Active Wellbeing Society is launching a free 10-week running course designed to help improve your running and build your confidence in a supportive environment.

Starting on Monday 30th May at 9:30am, the sessions start at Lightwoods Park and House (B67 5DP) by Bentley the Bear and is open to all skill levels, with the ultimate goal of helping participants work up to 5K. Places are limited. If you’re interested, please contact: sandwellags@theaws.org

Carers Week Activity – Coffee Morning for African Caribbean & Dual Heritage

Please see the poster below for more details about the West Bromwich African Caribbean Resource Centre’s Coffee morning, to be held on the 9th June from 10am-1pm at their centre in West Bromwich (B70 6LY)

This event will provide an opportunity for African Caribbean and Dual Heritage unpaid carers to:

• – Meet other carers and share experiences
  – Identify key issues affecting them and access support from WBACRC and Forward Carers (Sandwell Carers Hub)
  -Speak directly with African Caribbean Carers Champions, helping ensure their voices inform local commissioning and service design
  – Contribute to the development of a new African Caribbean & Dual Heritage Carer Support Group/Forum, in partnership with Black-led organisations and faith groups
•  

Exhibitors on the day will include Sandwell African Caribbean Mental Health Foundation, Oscar Sandwell, and Forward Carers.
