WOOD GREEN ACADEMY is seeking to appoint a dynamic, committed, and well-qualified teacher of Science. As an academy, we are over-subscribed and consistently achieve some of the highest results in Sandwell. In our most recent OFSTED of February 2020 the school was judged to be good with outstanding features. We are extremely proud of being one of few secondary schools in the country to have been graded as outstanding for behaviour and attitudes under the new Ofsted framework. This standard was maintained in our recent OFSTED inspection of April 2025. Further to this, we have an excellent location being less than 15 miles from the centre of Birmingham whilst having excellent national links via both the M5 and the M6.

 

You would join a welcoming, highly trained, and very supportive Science department.  The department is led by the Head of Science and Biology who is supported by the Head of Chemistry, the Head of Physics and the Lead for Progression in Science ( yr 7-9) The department has also great experience in successfully mentoring both ITT trainees and ECTs.

    Learning Support Assistant

     

    CONTRACT: 29 hours 10 mins per week –TERM TIME ONLY Fixed contract until August 31st, 2026

    SALARY SCALE: Band B Pt 3 + SEN Allowance * This would be pro-rata for hours and Term Time ONLY (approx. £17,000 per year)

     

    We are seeking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant whose principal role is to provide in-classroom support to our SEND students, under the direction of the teacher. The role involves providing both academic support and welfare support. This is a fixed term post, starting ASAP after all pre-employment checks have been completed. We are particularly but not solely interested in applicants who have the ability to support students in Maths, English and Science at Key Stage 4.

     

    The successful candidate should be able to offer excellent communication skills and experience of working with young people would be an advantage. Applicants must have at least a grade C or 4 in English or Maths at GCSE/Level 2. Original evidence of qualifications will be required at interview. 

     

    This position provides excellent preparation for people who are considering careers in teaching and who are looking to gain experience of working with young people or working in a school setting.

      REMOTE LEARNING

      Students will access remote learning under three conditions.

      1. They have been suspended or excluded from school
      2. They are in the internal isolation unit
      3. There is an enforced school closure. (For example due to adverse weather conditions, issues in regards to the premises, issues in regards to staffing levels)

       

      Individual Remote Learning (scenarios 1 and 2), Years 7 to 11

      Students need to follow their normal timetable. They need to go to the remote learning section of the website, and their subject. They will be directed to the student hub and then an isolation or remote learning folder. The students will need to follow the links by selecting their year group and the correct half term.

      (1A is the first half term of the Autumn term, 1B is the second half term of the Autumn term, 2A is the first half term of the Spring term, 2B is the second half term of the Spring term, 3A is the first half term of the Summer term and 3B is the second half term of the Summer term).

       

      Students will need to recognise where they are on a scheme of learning by using the dates as a guide and by looking in their exercise books / work folders at previous learning.

       

      Individual remote learning includes resources and activities from Oak Academy lessons, BBC Bitesize lessons, online text books and activities, reference to work on the student hub, as well as other online platforms. For some subjects, Oak Academy lessons will have been redirected to the United Learning platform.

      Students should also complete set homework as instructed via classcharts.

       

      Year 12 /13

      Teachers and students will discuss the work to be completed via email.

       

      Classes / Years / Whole School are working remotely. (Scenario 3)

      Where whole classes are not in school, teachers will run live lessons via Microsoft teams.

       

      Students have received training on how to use Microsoft teams, and there are video guides on the student hub for those that need reminding. These can also be accessed via the remote learning section of the website. The set protocols in regards to behaviour on virtual lessons have also been shared and can be found on the student hub. If students require help with accessing virtual lessons after using the guides, students should contact digihelp@woodgreenacademy.co.uk.

       

      Written work which needs to be submitted is done by using Microsoft team’s assignments.  Homework will be set using classcharts

       

      Lessons will follow the normal school timetable.  Students will be sent invitations via their teams calendar.  During lessons, students will participate by being invited to type into the chat area, by raising their virtual hand, by using polls (in the chat function), and by being asked direct questions by their teacher. It is unlikely that the students will be required to be in the virtual lesson for the full 60 minutes as they will be asked to complete tasks during the lesson. At this point they may be asked to leave the lesson, and then to rejoin at the end of the lesson to check learning.

       

      Attendance to lessons will be recorded. Absence to lessons will be reported to

      Student Support Managers / Year Leaders / Attendance Officer. Where students leave a lesson and do not return, this will be classed as an absence.

      Students can contact teachers individually using school email or via posts on their class team’s posts. Teachers will inform students on the preferred method.

       

      Remote assessment

      Teachers will be setting tasks via Microsoft team’s assignments, and students submit work via teams assignments or other platforms. These are then auto-marked (Microsoft forms, SAM learning, Mathswatch, etc), or are marked by the teacher.

       

      During live lessons, teachers will direct questions to named students, use an online assessment, or use the hands up facility / chat function for whole class response, to gauge learning.

       

      During prolonged closure (weeks), students in Year 7 -13 where they have more than two lessons of that subject per fortnight, the expectation is that they will be set an auto-marked assessment each week. Teachers will use this assessment to check learning and inform their planning. In Key stages 4 and 5, assignments whereby students receive personalised feedback about their work will be set in line with departmental assessment policies using platforms such as teams assignments, or requiring the students to email work to their teachers, who will mark the work and return it with feedback. Where subjects have less than a lesson a week, students will receive two auto-marked pieces of work over a half term.

      The Mental Health Foundation has announced the dates and theme of next year’s Mental Health Awareness Week will run from Monday, 9 May to Sunday 15 May 2022.

       

      The week will explore the experience of loneliness, its effect on our mental health and how we can all play a part in reducing loneliness in our communities.

       

      Why Loneliness?

      Loneliness is affecting more and more of us in the UK and has had a huge impact on our physical and mental health during the pandemic. Our connection to other people and our community is fundamental to protecting our mental health and we need to find better ways of tackling the epidemic of loneliness. We can all play a part in this.

       

      Reducing loneliness is a major step towards a mentally healthy society.

       

      Together we can tackle loneliness

      One in four adults feel lonely some or all of the time. There’s no single cause and there’s no one solution. After all, we’re all different! But, the longer we feel lonely, the more we are at risk of mental health problems. Some people are also at higher risk of feeling lonely than others. 

       

      For Mental Health Awareness Week 2022, we hope to raise awareness of the impact of loneliness on our mental health and the practical steps we can take to address it.

      Class Charts

      From September 2024, Class Charts is Wood Green Academy’s main communication tool with parents, replacing email and SMS text messages in most circumstances.  It is vital that all parents and carers can confidently access Class Charts. We recommend using the Class Charts for Parents app.
       
      Class Charts is an online system provides a range of key services for parents and carers, in one, handy location:

      If you click the Sign up tab within the app you will be presented with an account creation form.
      Simply fill in the form and enter your parent code in the Access code field. Clicking Sign up will log you into the account.

      Please note: Your Access Code is not the same as your password, the access code is only need for the initial sign up.

      This will bring up additional form options. Simply fill in the form and enter your parent code in the “Access code” field.

      Achievements & Behaviour

      Behaviour breakdown

      On the behaviour screen, you will be presented with graphs which represent an overview of your child’s achievement and behaviour data within a customisable timeframe.

      To change the date range of displayed behaviour data, simply click on the calendar icon to select from the available presets or create your own custom date range.

      Activity Feed

      Below these graphs you will find a list of behaviour activity relating to your child. These display the behaviour that was awarded, when it was awarded, who awarded the behaviour, the lesson the behaviour was awarded in, and how many points the award is worth. The level of detail within each behaviour award depends on the settings that your school has enabled.

       

      Attendance


      If it has been enabled by your school, you will be able to access your attendance information. Depending on your school’s setup, this is either shown on a day by day basis for each of your lessons or as AM and PM attendance for the day.

       

      The attendance colour coded system is broken down as follows:

      Adding / switching children

      To add another child to your Class Charts account, click on the add child option in the website menu or the add child icon within the app.

      You will then be asked for an access code.
      Next, enter your parent access code for the child you wish to add.

       

      This code will have been given to you by the school and is unique for that pupil.


      Once the parental code has been accepted, you will see the child you have just added as a selectable option in the menu.

       

      Click on the pupil to display that child’s behaviour and attendance data (if it has been enabled by your school).

       

      If your school has chosen to share homework information, the homework tasks for all children on your account will appear within the homework tab.

      Accessing Class Charts for Parents

      Logging in to the Class Charts Parent app

      When you tap the parent app icon on your device, you will be presented with the Class Charts Login screen.

      Simply enter the email address and password you used when creating your Class Charts account and you will be able to log back in.

      If you cannot remember your password you can click on the forgot password link to receive a password reset email.

      Logging in to the Class Charts Website

      To log back into your Class Charts account, first ensure that you have selected the parent option.

      Next, select the I already have an account option and enter your login details.

      If you cannot remember your password you can click on forgot password to reset it.

      Settings

      To access the settings menu for your parent account, select Account Settings from the 3 lines menu in the top right corner of the website.

      If using one of the parent apps, you can access the settings menu by clicking on the settings cog shown on the right.


      Within the settings menu, you will be given the option to change your name, along with the email address and password that you use for your account.

      You can also change the displayed language, by selecting a different option from the Language drop down menu.

      To change the timeframe that your account displays information in, click on the date range in the top right hand corner of the website. If using the apps, click on the calendar icon. You will be able to apply preset date ranges or a custom range of your preference.

      To set a custom date range, simply click on your start date and then your end date and click apply.

      The Learning Hub Newsletter

      The Learning Hub

      The Learning Hub is a wonderful multi-purpose space: we host a library of over 9000 books to aid with personal and academic growth; we have a newly updated computer suite with access to printing; the Learning Hub team facilitate tutoring and guided revision sessions as well as allowing time for independent study.

       

      As the “hub” of the school, the space is also used to host various themed events throughout the year, all of which contribute to the culture of learning and development that Wood Green Academy is known for. A safe and inclusive space for all, the Learning Hub is open to all students before and after school as well as throughout the day via a regular rotation.

      Books

      With over 9,000 books to choose from, if a student believes they “don’t like reading”, then they simply haven’t spent enough time exploring the Learning Hub.

       

      Our Library shelves are full of every kind of tale, adventure and mystery. From the mythical adventures of magic wielding creatures in fantasy realms, to the very real troubles and trials of teenagers that can be found in the contemporary section, our shelves cover every world imaginable. And as for our non-fiction collection, students can explore everything from anthropology to zoology; law to languages; biographies to cultural histories.

       

      We are currently focused on broadening the spectrum of content we host – the team are always keen to get new book recommendations from students and staff to make sure we cater to everybody’s tastes and learning journeys. We’re also looking to expand our range in resources to include audio and e-books.

      Meet the Team

      As well as being a Learning Hub Manager Miss Melia is an Academic Coach in English. She recently finished reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and listening to the Harry Potter series on Audible… again. She’s currently listening to Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library and reading Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. A fan all things creative, Miss Melia is always looking for new themes for displays, to keep the Learning Hub’s bright and engaging atmosphere fresh.  

       

      Mr King is a Learning Hub Manager, and he also supports students in Maths as an Academic Coach. As well as this he has a huge love of history, evidenced in his choice of books. He almost exclusively reads books related to history or mythology. One of his recent favourites is The Kalevala which is a collection of stories and myths from Finland.

       

      The Learning Hub also have a select team of Student Librarians from the Sixth Form.

      The Learning Hub Calendar

      The Learning Hub publishes a monthly newsletter which includes a calendar of local and global days of celebration as well as themed events that are running each month in the Hub.

      The Learning Hub team have plans to run poetry evenings; a book launch; silent disco revision sessions, and many more.
