Please find attached the 28^th and  29^th edition of the Careers Newsletter (2026)

This week’s jobs are an Art conservator and a Herpetologist (what is that you say? Then open and read all about it).

Edition 28 contains lots of information about Prospects – what can I do with my degree? This resource was originally designed for students leaving university, having just completed a degree within a specific subject area. It can be used by students of any age to consider where studying a particular subject could take you. You can click into each job role to learn more about the responsibilites, demand and pay.

Edition 29 contains lots of information about using AI for Career Preparation – In this module, you’ll discover how AI tools can become your time saver for career research, CV building, and networking. By the end, you’ll not only understand how AI can enhance your career prep but you’ll also have the practical skills to make it happen.

Using AI for Interview and Assessment Preparation – This module is designed to show you how AI tools can support your journey to becoming interview-ready, helping you refine your skills, craft standout responses, and boost your confidence. By the end, you’ll have actionable insights into leveraging AI for career advancement.

Walsall College is offering a range of taster sessions and events designed to help students explore their options and feel more confident about their next steps after Year 11 or sixth form.

The college is running “Try Before You Apply” taster sessions, giving students the chance to experience different courses before making final decisions. These sessions are particularly useful for those who may be unsure about their future, as they provide a valuable insight into college life and help students make informed choices about their next steps. As part of their events programme, Walsall College is also hosting its annual STEAM Event on Wednesday 22nd April 2026. During this event, students will be able to take part in hands-on activities led by current students, learn more about STEAM-related careers, meet local universities and employers, and try out interactive demonstrations and challenges, all designed to give a real insight into opportunities within science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.

In addition, a Travel and Tourism Coffee Morning will take place on Tuesday 12th May from 10:00am to 12:00pm. This session will provide an interactive insight into aviation, travel and tourism courses, while also exploring potential career pathways and student destinations, and offering the chance to connect with college staff and careers professionals. For students who have not yet secured a place for next year, Walsall College also offers application support sessions. Their admissions team can visit schools to support students in completing applications, exploring suitable courses and making a clear plan for September, helping to ensure that no student is left without a pathway.

ASSA ABLOY is opening its doors for an Early Talent Open Day, giving students and graduates the chance to explore apprenticeship, undergraduate and graduate career pathways.

The event will take place on Saturday 7th March, 10.00am–1.00pm, at the ASSA ABLOY site in Willenhall. This is a great opportunity for students to meet the team, learn about different roles and find out what working for a global organisation could look like.

KPMG is hosting a Life in a Day event in Birmingham, giving students a real insight into what their future could look like as an apprentice at KPMG.

This in-person event is designed for students aged 16–18 who are considering an apprenticeship in areas such as tax, audit, technology or finance. Parents and carers are very welcome to attend.

Please note, the confirmed and correct date for the Birmingham event is Wednesday 30th April.

Dinner will be provided, and colleagues from the Birmingham office will be available throughout the evening to chat, share experiences and answer questions.

By the end of the event, students will gain:

A clear understanding of KPMG and its apprenticeship pathways

First-hand experience of working in a professional office environment

BDO, one of the world’s largest accounting and professional services firms, is offering an in-person Easter Work Experience Programme for female students in Year 12, Year 13 and university who are interested in business or accounting careers.

The programme will take place at BDO’s Birmingham office during the Easter break on Thursday 9th April 2026 and is designed to give students real insight into working in a professional services environment.

Session times

Morning session, 10.00am–12.30pm, for Year 12 and Year 13 students

During the day, students will:

Network with BDO professionals and experts

Gain exposure to BDO’s business and working culture

Take part in interactive sessions that bring their varied and exciting roles to life

Students who enjoy the experience and perform well may be fast-tracked to an assessment centre, which could lead to a degree apprenticeship at Level 6 or 7 or a graduate role with the firm.

As part of National Careers Week, Lloyds Banking Group is hosting a free virtual careers event for Year 11, 12 and 13 students who are interested in apprenticeships, banking and finance careers.

Taking place online on Tuesday 3rd March from 5pm to 6pm, this interactive session gives students the chance to hear directly from current apprentices about their real career journeys and the different pathways into the industry.

Lloyds Banking Group is the UK’s largest bank, supporting over 30 million customers and employing around 60,000 people globally. The group includes well-known brands such as Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Scottish Widows.

SCL Core Skills Open Day, Thursday 19th February

SCL Core Skills is inviting Year 11 students to attend an Open Day on Thursday 19th February, with centres across the Black Country open from 11am to 4pm.

This is a great opportunity for students to look around the centres, meet tutors and mentors, and find out more about the courses available from September 2026.

SCL offers alternative and supportive learning pathways for 16 to 18-year-olds, with a strong focus on personal development, employability skills and progression into further education or employment.

Courses on offer include:

• Gateway Level 1 in Building and Construction

• SEN provision delivering Gateway Level 1 Diplomas in Retail, Business and Hospitality, plus enrichment

• NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Skills for Business

• NCFE Cache Level 2 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

All courses include an ID Passport, covering life skills such as money management, CV building, interview techniques, confidence and motivation.
